Honeymoon - Mae Hong Sorn, Thailand - June
21, 2000
We stayed at Rook's Holiday (you guessed it, a former Holiday Inn) in the
center of town.
We took a river boat towards Burma (Myanmar). This basically consists
of a V-6 engine on a swivel mount and a 15-foot drive shaft. This keeps
the prop barely submerged so that the boat draws less than two feet of
water and the boat is very fast.
On the way to the village where women wrap brass coils around their
necks to elongate them, we passed wild and domesticated elephants. One
wild one was keeping cool by placing great clumps of grass on his head.
It should be noted that the Thai army was on active march on the roads
in this region. It's unclear to me whether this is drug interdiction or
routine patrol of the Burmese border. They were not of much concern. The
guys casually dressed in loose camouflage and dungarees who were climbing
up the river bank with Belgian assault rifles were the ones I worried about.
I didn't ask for a photo.
We also went to a Burmese-style temple.
